Confessions of a Non-Nappy Head

Any one who has known me a while knows my issues with my hair….I dont have what i call “regular” black folks hair.

My hair will not afro like Angela Davis *loved her fro in the 70′s*

In the ’90s braids became uber popular again, but not only corn rows but individuals and micros, it was the start of the natural hair movement, or at least the first time i became aware of it.

Let me give you a little back ground on me, i am a black woman, that is how i see my self, not a biracial, not multi-racial, but black.  Now my hair tells a bit of a different story, my family DNA is comprised of several different ethic back grounds, from Native American, European, Asian, and of course Africa.  My hair and my features tell a tale of a girl/woman who aint all black.

Growning up i was told i have “Good Hair” i often wondered why it was called that.  I though every one had hair like me.  Almost every one in my family had hair like mine.  My hair is very soft, very thin, and wavy/curly.  I have hair like my Dad, his mom and sister.  My mom’s hair is a bit thicker than mine but still not a nap any where to be seen.

When i was 14 i got my first relaxer, it was great, it was wonderful my hair would stay straight all the time even when i would sweat.  Now i didnt need a touch up but once every 6 months.

At 18 i started to color my hair, i started out with Posner rinse, it was a purple color, though out college i would experiment with color, while still getting relaxers.  I went lighter and lighter on my hair color until i found a orangish-red color that i adore by Textures &Tones called Flaming Desire.

Relaxing and coloring were taking a tole on my hair.  I had to make a choice.  So the color won out, i have not relaxed my hair since 1999.  I miss my relaxer.  I did not do it for the nappy haired movement, i feel left out of the nappy haired movement.  I have visited a few of these natural hair site, and to my dismay there are very few people with hair like mine on there.  I wonder if they feel like i feel… Your not really black or not black enough if your hair is not nappy.

The Nappy-Nazi as i call them, kill me.  They want to push their point of view on every one.  The want to shout from the roof tops the evils of the creamy crack, and bash any one who dares to appose that point of view.

While i think it is wonderful that many women of color have embraced their natural texture and kinks and curls.  I feel there is a large segment of women of color who are in hair limbo like me.

It is hard for me to find hair care products for my hair that wont dry it out *stuff made for Europeans* or that has so much oil in it, it will weight my hair down leaving it limp *stuff made for black folks*

I have found a few products made by multi-racial people that works for me for the time being, like Blended Beauty

Currently my hair is growing out of a bad hair cut, so i have been sporting wigs lol.  Here are a few pictures of my hair, i will post more when i get home.

2009….GOING, GOING, GONE!!!!

I can believe it is the 16th of December, this year has flown by but not really in a good way.

Let me first say I am truely Blessed, I have had a rocky year and I am still here, but it was really rocky, and I can not say that i am sad to see 2009 close out.

It is the end of the first decade of the new century, we have seen some wild ass changes this past 10 years.  Who knew that i would end up in Maryland living.

Who knew that the little known Senator with the name no body could say his name would be the first Black President of the United States would be elected in 2008

Who knew i would be doing sewing as a side gig and makeup…who knew….

*side note i just LOVE JILL SCOTT!!!!*

Yes in 2009 i decided to open up my own sewing biz and specialize in plus sized white clothes for curvy women.  Doing my first fashion show this fall made me realize i need to do the makeup for my clothes so they can look how i want them to…so i decided to do make up too.  I got back into makeup inspired from YouTube *so addicted*

But i have had other issues from work to personal that have kind of kicked the wind out of my Sails sometimes

2009 has been a year of suprises for me, and i am ready to see her go.  I know 2010 will have bigger and better things in store for me.

Look for changes to Sew Sew Cute Creations in the upcoming year, we have expanded to designing clothes and to doing make-up.  There will be some changes to the blog

So stay tuned, have a great HOLIDAY!!!!!! AND BE BLESSED

see you in 2010 where we are getting it in…

Xsparkage – I love her hair color and the colors that she puts together

Enkore – LOVE HIM gives great tips on how to get good quality brushes and makeup and not break the bank

Petrilude - Does some great looks, not sure if i would copy them all but he has great tips and looks that inspire me to create some of my own

Caskew7- Can identify with her MAC addiction and loves some of the every day looks for women of color.

EmsyJay – love her sense of humor and her love of classical music as well as makeup, great inspired looks

eyeXluvXmakeup- Loves her color choices and her wig collection, and not afraid to take risks with colors on brown skin.

Hair Today…..

Gone Tomorrow…….

As some of you all know i am a gemini, i love to change up my looks from cutting my hair, to wearing colored contacts the whole nine…. i recently cut my hair even shorter, but as always when i cut my hair i long for long hair.   So i have found that wigs are a great way to change up my look.  One great wig i found is Bali Girl by Freetress, i got mine from Hair Sisters, GREAT WIG…i love it… it is such a sexy wig even my sweetie liked it lol.

I found out about the wig from some of the YouTuber’s i follow and just had to have it.  Now most Divas get it in the blondish color but you know i have to be different, i got in with Red Highlits the 3T350 .  I have gotten a few other wigs but this one is my favorite, the picture does not do it justice.  I will post a few pics of Bali Girl and i will have to do another blog on the rest of my collection…..

It’s Back to the 70′s

I am in a group called Curvy Diamond Divas (CCD), a yahoo group community that has some of the most amazing people in it.  CCD had a 70′s party

So any one who knows me knows i love the 70′s, if i could have gotten some Pucci print fabric but a last i could not.  But i did have some fabric I bought last year from Vogue Fabrics in Chicago (which i miss dearly btw).  So i made a Mini Dress from two patterns, Simplicity Patterns 3539 for the dress and another Simplicity Pattern for the sleeves *i have to find it to post*.  I had a few issues with the bodice but after i worked them out, i think the dress came out pretty good i have some material left over, i might make a little top with it.  So i bought an afro wig from Hair Sisters.com, this thing is huge, i mean massive, i got the hair flower from My Diva’s Closet, the shoes were a steal when Fileen’s Basement was closing :(, i got the wedges for 4.99, black satin Steve Maddens.

Let me know what you think of my 70′s Look.  I made a little video of it also.

A Day In History

I sit back and reflect on January 20, 2009 and how this day will go down in history.  The day many of us young and old never thought we would live to see.  A day where the old guard has changed.  Where not only black men and women but every other race of people came together and did a collective sigh and cry.  That this man is giving us hope for the future, like the old negro spiritual “Lift Every Voice and Sing”

barack-obama-and-progress11

President Obama is a different kind of Prez, he is calling not only for congress and our elected leaders to come together he is calling for ALL Americans to come together, roll up their sleeves and help out their fellow man. To get back to some traditional ways of doing thing and life.  You dont have to be rich and famous to give your time to your community.

While the economy is still in the dumper and we are still at war, i can smile a little brighter and breath a little easier that some of the Dream that Dr. King had as come to pass….

If you are intersted in volunteering please check out http://www.volunteermatch.org/
